Oak Wilt

Leaves wilt and brown from the top down in mid-summer, often dropping while still half-green. A red oak can go from healthy to dead in a matter of weeks, and it spreads to nearby oaks fast.

Never prune or wound an oak between April and October — the beetles that spread oak wilt are drawn to fresh cuts. Prune oaks only in the dormant season, and if a storm wounds one in summer, seal the cut and call us the same day. We follow the latest Michigan DNR and MSU Extension guidance on every diagnosis.
