Michigan has watched two of its most beloved trees fall to invaders. Emerald ash borer has killed tens of millions of ash trees across the state. Oak wilt spreads through red oak stands every summer and, once it takes hold, moves fast.

Hayworth Tree Service helps you get ahead of it. We diagnose what is wrong — a pest, a fungus, a nutrient problem, or plain old stress — and lay out honest options: treat the tree if it can be saved, or remove it safely before it becomes a hazard or a source of spread. Catching it early is everything.

What you get with Hayworth Tree Service

  • Free, honest diagnosis — treat or remove
  • Oak wilt awareness and safe removal of infected trees
  • Emerald ash borer assessment for at-risk ash
  • Guidance on hemlock woolly adelgid and other threats

Warning Signs to Watch For

Oak wilt

Leaves on a red oak suddenly wilt and brown from the top down in summer, often dropping while still half-green. It can kill a red oak in a matter of weeks.

Emerald ash borer

D-shaped exit holes in the bark, thinning from the top of the canopy, S-shaped tunnels under the bark, and woodpeckers stripping the trunk for larvae.

Hemlock woolly adelgid

Small white, cottony tufts at the base of hemlock needles on the underside of twigs. Left alone, it slowly starves the tree.

General decline

Early leaf drop, dead branches scattered through the crown, cracked or oozing bark, or mushrooms at the base all signal a tree in trouble.

How We Handle Sick Trees

  1. 01

    Inspect and identify

We look at the whole tree — canopy, bark, roots, and setting — and identify what is actually going on rather than guessing.

  2. 02

    Give you straight options

We tell you honestly whether the tree is worth treating, whether it needs to come down, and what each path costs.

  3. 03

    Treat or remove

For trees worth saving, we recommend the right care and timing. For lost causes, we remove them safely — carefully, in the case of oak wilt, to avoid spreading it.

  4. 04

    Protect the rest

We advise on the neighboring trees too — timing pruning right and watching for spread so you don’t lose the whole stand.

What Affects Treatment Cost

Plant health work is priced by the tree, the problem, and the plan. The initial assessment is free. Factors include:

The diagnosis

A treatable pest on a healthy tree is a different job — and cost — from removing a large tree already lost to disease.

Tree size and number

A single ornamental is simpler than a row of mature ash or a stand of red oaks that all need attention.

Treatment vs. removal

Ongoing care and monitoring is a different scope than a one-time safe removal of an infected tree.

Access and spread risk

Oak wilt in particular requires careful timing and handling to avoid moving the disease to healthy oaks nearby.

The one rule every Michigan oak owner should know

Never prune or wound an oak between April and October. The sap beetles that spread oak wilt are drawn to fresh cuts, and a single mid-summer prune can infect a healthy tree. If a storm wounds your oak in the growing season, seal the wound the same day and call us.

Prune oaks only in the dormant window — roughly November through March — when the beetles are inactive. It is the simplest, cheapest thing you can do to protect a red oak, and most people have no idea.

What our customers say

Highly recommend Hayworth Tree Service. I reached out early this spring and had a response in a timely manner. Much to my surprise they contacted me and had availability the following day. The process and clean up was fantastic. The tree was very large, next to my house and had some wires to work around. Very professional service. I'd call them again for any tree service needs!

Steven and his crew took great care of me. I had some major trees along the back of my house that needed to go. Steven was great in communication all the way from estimates to scheduling and completion. His quote beat most but I was happy to pay more than a few based on his knowledge, experience and skill.

They are extremely kind, communicative, and their work speaks for itself! They are careful with all of their work and do a wonderful job cleaning up.

Tree Disease & Pest Treatment FAQs

Red oaks rarely survive once infected — they decline within weeks. The priority becomes protecting nearby healthy oaks and removing the infected tree correctly. White oaks are more resistant and sometimes hold on. We will assess yours.
