Good pruning is quiet work. Done right, nobody notices the cuts — they just see a tree that looks balanced, lets in light, and stops scraping the roof. Done wrong, you get a topped, stressed tree that grows back weaker and uglier than before.

Hayworth Tree Service prunes to proper arborist standards, not with a chainsaw and a guess. We remove deadwood, lift low limbs off your house and driveway, thin dense canopies so wind passes through, and shape young trees so they grow strong. And we do it at the right time of year for each species — which, for oaks in Michigan, matters more than most people realize.

What you get with Hayworth Tree Service

  • Proper cuts that protect long-term tree health
  • Deadwood, clearance, and structural pruning
  • Correct timing — including oak-wilt-safe pruning windows
  • We never top trees — no exceptions

When Your Trees Need Pruning

Branches on the house

Limbs scraping shingles, blocking gutters, or rubbing siding invite moisture, pests, and damage. We lift and clear them back to a safe distance.

Deadwood in the canopy

Gray, leafless branches hanging in an otherwise green tree are hazards waiting to drop. Removing them makes the tree safer and healthier.

Dense, heavy canopy

A thick, sail-like crown catches Michigan wind and storms. Thinning reduces the load on limbs and lets light reach your lawn and garden.

Crossing or rubbing limbs

Branches grinding against each other create wounds that let in decay. Selective cuts fix the structure before problems set in.

Our Pruning Approach

  1. 01

    Assess the tree and goals

Clearance, health, safety, or looks — we start by understanding what you want, then tell you what the tree actually needs.

  2. 02

    Prune to standard

We make clean cuts at the branch collar, follow ANSI A300 pruning guidelines, and never remove more live wood than a tree can spare.

  3. 03

    Mind the timing

We prune oaks only in the dormant season to avoid oak wilt, and time other species to minimize stress and disease risk.

  4. 04

    Clean and haul

Every branch and twig gets chipped and cleared. Your yard looks better than when we pulled in.

What Affects Pruning Cost

Pruning prices depend on the tree and the amount of work — not a flat rate. We give you a written estimate after we see it. Key factors:

Tree size and access

A small ornamental you can reach from the ground is quick. A mature oak that has to be climbed and roped takes more time and skill.

How much is removed

A light deadwood cleanup is less involved than a full structural prune and canopy raise on a large, neglected tree.

Number of trees

Doing several trees in one visit is more efficient than a single call-out, and we can often price the group better.

Obstacles below

Fences, gardens, pools, and power lines under the canopy mean careful rigging so nothing falls where it shouldn’t.

Why “topping” is never the answer

Topping — hacking a tree down to stubs — is the most common mistake we get called to fix. It starves the tree, triggers weak, fast-growing sprouts, and creates decay pockets that lead to failure a few years later. We will never do it.

Instead, when a tree is genuinely too big for its space, we use crown reduction — shortening limbs back to sound lateral branches so the tree stays healthy and naturally shaped. If a tree truly outgrew its spot, we will tell you honestly and talk through the options.

What our customers say

From start to finish these guys were great! Steven responded quickly and gave an estimate the very next day. They removed lots of dead branches and trimmed multiple trees in our yard. They also removed a huge tree. I was impressed at how thoroughly they cleaned up when the job was finished. Very professional, knowledgeable and friendly.

Questions & Answers

Tree Trimming & Pruning FAQs

Late winter is ideal for most species. Oaks are the big exception — prune them only from November through March to avoid attracting the beetles that spread oak wilt. We time each job to the tree.
