Eaton Rapids earned its "Island City" nickname the honest way. The Grand River and Spring Brook split around a handful of little islands right in the middle of town, and open water is never far from anybody's back lot. Those banks grow big, fast, thirsty trees — cottonwoods, silver maples, willows, and box elder — all of them leaning out over the current and dropping limbs when the weather turns.

We know this stretch of river well. Hayworth Tree Service is a family-owned, licensed and insured outfit, and riverside work is some of the most careful cutting we do. Steve and the crew have lowered a lot of heavy wood off tight island lots and shaded riverbanks without putting a scratch on anybody's dock.

Living with trees on the islands

Water is good for growth and hard on stability. A cottonwood or silver maple down by the Grand puts on size in a hurry, but the wood stays weak and the roots sit in soft, sometimes undercut ground. Come a wet spring and a summer squall, those are the trees that split a leader or shed a limb the size of a small tree on their own. If you've got one hanging over the house, the deck, or the water, it's worth a free look and honest risk assessment before it decides for you.

When the wind does win, we're the ones cleaning up after it. Our storm damage crew handles the split trunks and hangers, and our emergency service is there for the middle-of-the-night calls when something's on the roof or across the drive.

Riverbank trees play by different rules

You can't just fell a tree that's leaning over moving water and hope for the best. We rig it — roping limbs down in controlled pieces and swinging them back over dry ground so nothing lands in the river or on the dock. Whether it's a full removal of a dying giant or a crown reduction to pull weight off a leaner and give it a few more good years, the plan starts with where every piece is going to land. Afterward we grind the stump so the bank mows clean.

Eaton Rapids keeps us moving around the region, too. We're up in Charlotte constantly, over in Dimondale along the same river, and east into Mason most weeks.

The Island City's go-to crew

What our neighbors here tell people is simple. We get out quick for the estimate, our pricing is fair and up front, and we treat a riverside yard like it's our own — careful around the house, careful around the wires, careful around the water. When the job's done, the brush and rounds are gone and the ground is raked smooth. No ruts, no mess, no leftover pile to deal with yourself.

What our customers say

Highly recommend Hayworth Tree Service. I reached out early this spring and had a response in a timely manner. Much to my surprise they contacted me and had availability the following day. The process and clean up was fantastic. The tree was very large, next to my house and had some wires to work around. Very professional service. I'd call them again for any tree service needs!

Steven and his crew took great care of me. I had some major trees along the back of my house that needed to go. Steven was great in communication all the way from estimates to scheduling and completion. His quote beat most but I was happy to pay more than a few based on his knowledge, experience and skill.

Absolutely PHENOMENAL work! I purchased a home and the backyard was entirely overgrown with trees and shrubs. I would 10/10 recommend this business to anyone and everyone. They are extremely kind, communicative, and their work speaks for itself! They are careful with all of their work and do a wonderful job cleaning up.

Tree Service in Eaton Rapids — FAQs

Yes. We rig those limbs down over the water and haul them out rather than dropping them in. Riverbank trees are some of the trickiest jobs in town, and we do them regularly.
