Portland calls itself the City of Two Rivers, and it comes by the name honestly — the Grand and the Looking Glass meet right in the heart of town, stitched together by the riverwalk and a pair of restored covered bridges. All that water grows a particular cast of trees: big cottonwoods and silver maples crowding the banks, willows and sycamores leaning out over the current, and ash struggling along back in the floodplain. Lovely in July, and a real handful when the water's up and the wind is working.

Riverbank trees are some of the trickiest jobs going, and they're right in our lane. Hayworth Tree Service is family-owned, licensed and insured, and we've taken a lot of heavy, awkward trees off Portland's soft banks without a piece touching the water, the dock, or the walk.

Where the Grand meets the Looking Glass

Trees that grow with their feet near a river grow fast and hold weak wood, and the banks that feed them also undercut their roots. That combination is why a cottonwood or silver maple by the water is often the first to fail in a blow — and why a leaner over the river should be looked at before it lets go. When one has to come out, we remove it by rigging: every piece roped and swung back over solid ground, never free-dropped toward the current. When a leaner is still sound, a crown reduction can pull weight off it and buy years, and a good tree with a split fork can be cabled and braced rather than lost.

Leaners, deadwood, and storm work

High water and hard wind are the two things that keep us busy in Portland. When a storm drops a tree across a drive, onto a structure, or over the riverwalk, our emergency service rolls a crew, and our storm damage cleanup clears the split trunks and hangers and hauls the mess off. Once a tree's down for good, we grind the stump below grade so the bank or the yard closes back over it. When both rivers run high in spring, the saturated banks loosen root systems that looked rock-solid all winter, and that's usually when the calls start — so if a tree has been leaning a little more each year, spring is the season to have it checked rather than gambled on.

Portland sits right between several towns we work constantly. We're up in Ionia most weeks, east toward Grand Ledge often, and down in Westphalia regularly.

Why the City of Two Rivers calls us

On a riverside lot, you're trusting a crew to work over water and soft ground without leaving a mark, and that's exactly what our Portland customers tell people we do. We come out fast to look, quote fair and in writing, and rig carefully so nothing lands where it shouldn't. When we pull out, the wood and brush are gone and the bank is raked smooth — no ruts, no leftover pile, no branches bobbing in the current. That care is the whole reputation.

What our customers say

Highly recommend Hayworth Tree Service. I reached out early this spring and had a response in a timely manner. Much to my surprise they contacted me and had availability the following day. The process and clean up was fantastic. The tree was very large, next to my house and had some wires to work around. Very professional service. I'd call them again for any tree service needs!

Steven and his crew took great care of me. I had some major trees along the back of my house that needed to go. Steven was great in communication all the way from estimates to scheduling and completion. His quote beat most but I was happy to pay more than a few based on his knowledge, experience and skill.

Absolutely PHENOMENAL work! I purchased a home and the backyard was entirely overgrown with trees and shrubs. I would 10/10 recommend this business to anyone and everyone. They are extremely kind, communicative, and their work speaks for itself! They are careful with all of their work and do a wonderful job cleaning up.

Tree Service in Portland — FAQs

Yes. Trees over the water in the City of Two Rivers are a specialty. We rope the limbs back over dry ground instead of dropping them in the current, so nothing ends up in the river or on your dock.
